Every little girl dreams of becoming a princess and living in a fairytale on their wedding day. We all imagine who our “Prince Charming” will be and how we will live happily ever after as husband and wife. I know that I have, on occasion, pictured such magical events but I rarely ever consider how I am going to create that magical fairytale look. Below I list the top five trends for winter weddings and how to incorporate your fairytale desires with an updated modern look.
TREND ONE: PAIR GREENS AND PASTELS WITH YOUR WINTER WHITES
When we think of a “winter wonderland” wedding, our minds drift automatically to boring whites and ivories. There is no need to decorate your wedding in Winter White from top to bottom. Take the modern route and play with natural wintery greens and pastels. Try to display leafy greens mixed into your centerpieces of white roses or adding dusty pastel colors to your neutral all-white color palette. The effect is still soft and romantic without taking away from your winter theme
TREND TWO: COMFORT FOODS
If you grew up as a Catholic Italian like I did, you will understand the importance of food and drink at a celebration. At most weddings, food goes on the back burner with guests being offered the average chicken or beef option. Stand out at your winter wedding by offering guests an assortment of winter comfort foods. How about a hot chocolate buffet bar? Or serving miniature pot pies, tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters to your guests during happy hour? What about a gourmet mac and cheese option for your main course? There are many different ways to get creative with your food; you just need to think outside of the box.
TREND THREE: JEWEL TONES FOR YOUR WINTER BRIDESMADES
Traditional winter brides navigate towards black for their winter bridesmaids but you should have a little fun with this. There is no reason to believe you must have muted bridesmaid dresses. You are the bride so you will stand out no matter what! Instead of black, play with the natural green color we referenced in trend one, or play up the color gold or midnight blue. For the most daring brides, consider dressing your best girls in the same white you plan on wearing or sparkly silver. There are no rules to dressing your ‘maids when it comes to your modern winter wedding.
TREND FOUR: METALLIC WEDDING CAKES
A great way to update the traditional winter white wedding cake is to include metallic colors or glitter into the design. Asking your cake designer to incorporate edible glitter can create the illusion of fallen snow. Adding metallic designs around the cake can also create a 3D effect that is quite impressive for your guests.
TREND FIVE: FAIRYTALE BRIDAL GOWNS
Unlike the trends mentioned above, there are a few bridal classics that never go out of style and look great no matter what décor or color you add to your winter wedding. Consider playing up the winter theme by including fur wraps and coats with your wedding and bridesmaids gowns. Also, tulle is always a big hit at any fairytale winter wedding and can lend some added drama to your look. For the offbeat bride who likes to make some noise, wear a soft blue or mint green gown on your wedding day. Soft and romantic color is the newest bridal trend for 2014.
Once the shock of your engagement wears off and the excitement sets in, you’ll begin to make a lot of important decisions for your winter wedding. Just remember that all traditional classics can be updated and tailored to fit any styled winter wedding you may choose and have some fun with your special day.
